How To Show Cursor Location In Microsoft Word For Mac 2011

 Posted admin

The text cursor, or, is normally in the visible form in applications at the start of its display cycle. It then goes to the flashing sequence once you stop moving it with arrow keys or typing. However, in Word 2011 I'm constantly frustrated because the cursor disappears, or defaults to the invisible state of the flashing sequence, while I'm typing or moving it. This makes it painfully difficult to edit text without using the mouse. As I write this post and keep going back to word I'm noticing that it seems erratic as to what behavior it's acting. I think that it stays in whichever state it was last in, which 50% of the time is invisible.

I've since changed the blink rate to 200ms via. This helps a little in my frustration, but the behavior really needs fixed. Update 2014-09-02 It doesn't appear to be a problem on documents created locally.

It seems to be an issue with documents I've got from elsewhere, quite possibly from other operating systems. In my case, the copy/paste of the document did not work. But after a bunch of tries, I found a workaround: Move the mouse pointer outside the Table area! Yeah I know it sounds weird. But if I use the keyboard arrows to move the cursor in a table cell while the mouse pointer is located inside that table, the cursor will annoyingly start disappearing.

Select the 'Document Elements' tab from the Ribbon. Locate the Reference tab, which, by default, is the third tab from the right.

This seems related to the Move icon appearing in the upper-left corner of the table when you move in the mouse pointer, which keeps switching on/off when you use the keyboard. BTW I'm using Word 2011 v14.4.8 (latest as of now).

• Make sure your rulers are visible. If your rulers aren’t visible, choose View→Ruler to toggle them on.

• Position the mouse cursor over a ruler and then drag a guide line from the ruler into the document. It’s as if there are static guides secretly waiting for you to drag them out of the rulers! While you drag, Word tells you the location of the line on the ruler.

Position the static guide as desired and then release the mouse button. You can drag static guides to reposition them. To remove static guides, click the triangle next to the Show button on the Guides group of the Layout tab of the Ribbon and then choose Clear Static Guides from the resulting drop-down gallery. Static guides placed on the Master Pages tab appear when you’re viewing both the Master Pages tab and the All Contents tab.

Static guides placed on the All Contents tab don’t appear on the Master Pages tab. When removing static guides, you need to remove guides placed on the All Contents tab independently from the Master Pages tab.

Okay, new friends, this has been both helpful and confusing; I am not very fluent in computer lingo. However, somewhere in this long thread, a couple of folks mentioned this happening when text is in italics. I really like typing my text in italics.so I went back and un-italic-ed my Word documents, and magic!

My cursor pointer reappeared! Well, mostly.

I still am blocked out of the center of the document, but only for about 5 or 6 characters, and I can live with that. So thanks to all; it sounds like there is, indeed, a larger problem, but for my purposes, I can live with this for now.

Export vs Print It's true that printing shouldn't be concerned with hyperlinks, but for a long time, Adobe has positioned PDF as print-like output and had virtual printers for creating PDF from many applications, and included passing hyperlinks into PDF in some of those. I don't know of a great workflow for batch processing -- I tried that on a PC with Acrobat 11 and the links still didn't work before coming to this desperate alternative -- but at least it can get it done without starting up a PC. I'd prefer to have 'Save to PDF' or 'Save as PDF' or 'Export to PDF' as the way I create a PDF with functioning links. How to edit a hyperlink in word.
