Word For Mac Page Numbers: Roman Numerals Then Arabic Numerals

 Posted admin

Feb 22, 2008  I want the page numbers for the first section as lower case roman numerals (i, ii.ix, x etc.) and the page numbers for the second section as standard arabic numerals (1, 2, 3 etc.). The TOC displays page numbers for both sections only as arabic numerals (1, 2, 3 and so on). How to use roman numerals and numbers in page numbers in Word 2010. There may be cases where you want to use roman numerals and numbers in page numbers in microsoft word.

Use a section break to separate the two numbering schemes. To insert a section break use 'Page Layout' tab => 'Breaks' button => 'Next Page' (assuming that is how you want your break) To insert the page numbers, first go to the first section and do 'Insert' tab => 'Header & Footer' group => 'Page Number' button and pick the type of page numbering you want. Then, do 'Insert' tab => 'Header & Footer' group => 'Page Number' button => 'Format Page Numbers.' In the dialog, set the number format to roman numerals. By default, all your numbering should be correct now.

That is, your first set of pages should be in roman numerals, the second section in arabic. If the second section is not correctly numbered (because it doesn't start with the number you want), go to a header/footer containing a page number in the second section and activate it. Bring up the format dialog again through 'Insert' tab => 'Header & Footer' group => 'Page Number' button => 'Format Page Numbers.' Pick your number format (arabic). Now decide what you want, either choose 'Continue from previous section' if you want your numbers to continue (e.g.

I, ii, iii, iv, 5, 6, 7.) or choose 'Start at' followed by '1' to restart the numbering (e.g. I, ii, iii, iv, 1, 2, 3.).

Numbers:

I'm on a Mac (OS X ver. 10.11.6) using MS Word for Mac ver. 16.9 w/ an Office 365 subscription. Problem: I have a document where the page numbering was formatted as lower-case roman numerals (e.g., i, ii, iii, iv), but is now displaying as upper-case roman numerals (e.g., I, II, III, IV) after the most recent Jan.

19, 2018 office updates were installed. What I've done: I've double checked that (1) font format is not CAPS; (2) Page Number Format is lower-case roman numeral; and (3) I've tried inserting a field for page number [Numbering > Page] with the switch for lower-case roman numerals. Alas, the display (and printout) is still upper-case roman numerals. Question: Does anyone know why my lower-case roman numeral (e.g., i, ii, iii, iv) pages are now displaying as upper-case roman numerals (e.g., I, II, III, IV)? [Note that inserting a field > Numbering > pages > switch for lower-case roman numerals did notwork.] Question: Is there a reason why the field code is not working? Why I ask: I often have to share word documents between users of Macs and PCs. When I use the Insert >Tabs on bottom firefox 29. Page Numbers option, the anchored object moves around when the different operating systems open the file w/ the anchored-object page number.
